March 01, 2019

2019 is well underway and if you are wondering what the food and nutrition trends will be for this year, we’ve got six to share with you. We sat down with Marie Zamarripa, MS, RD from the Food Farmacist RD to tap into the latest nutrition trends for 2019.

#1 Celery Juice

Like it or not, celery juice looks like it’s here to stay in 2019. This new trend has people drinking the popular green juice on a weekly or even daily basis. While it won’t offer any magical cures, celery juice can be a healthy addition to an otherwise balanced, whole food approach. Make sure to include other high-fiber foods in your diet, like fruits and non-starchy vegetables, as the celery fiber is eliminated when extracting the juice.

#2 Grocery Delivery

Many stores are making it easier to order and receive groceries without leaving the home. This trend will continue to thrive in 2019. For a minimal cost per order, we can now create weekly meal plans and grocery lists while avoiding the crowds. This not only offers more convenience and encouragement for home-cooked meals, but it also helps maintain your grocery budget by reducing impulsive food purchases.

#3 Small, Green Improvements

In addition to dropping the plastic straws, we will continue to see sustainability improvements in 2019 to reduce environmental impact. More stores are offering greater incentives for BYOB (bringing your own bag) like reusable grocery bags or mesh produce bags. Additionally, the public will continue to show interest in trendy coffee tumblers and high-quality water bottles to reduce plastic waste.

#4 Instant Pot Recipes Galore

Life isn’t slowing down any time soon and now we have a fresh way to make eating healthier much easier. Instant Pot recipes will continue to thrive this year, presenting busy families and professionals with quick and healthy meal ideas that also taste amazing.

#5 Unique Non-Dairy Milk Alternatives

In 2019, we will see alot more unique options for non-dairy milk products outside of the usual almond and soy milk varieties. Options like oat milk, flaxseed milk or cashew milk are a few of the trending substitutes that accomodate a dairy-free diet, but offer a wide spectrum of new nourishing ingredients.

#6 Veggie-Based Grain Substitutes

As more people show interest in low-carb and paleo inspired diets, the need for grain-free alternatives is growing. Foods like pre-made zucchini noodles (zoodles), cauliflower rice and sweet potato noodles (swoodles) will offer a nutrient-dense, yet realistic, option for incorporating grain-free substitutes into your everyday meals.
